Child Passenger Safety Outreach and Education

The Child Passenger Safety Outreach and Education Program provides community education and general information about child passenger safety including:

  • Proper use and installation of child safety seats.
  • Trainings for health care and teaching professionals, community service program staff, childcare providers and parents.
  • Referrals to community programs that provider child safety seats for low-income families.

Children must be properly secured in a child passenger restraint system (car seat/booster) IN THE BACK SEAT until at least 8 years.

California Car Seat Laws

Here is a simple quiz to determine if your child is ready to ride on the seat, without a booster

  1. Do your child’s knees bend comfortably over the front of the seat?
  2. Does the shoulder belt cross the center of the shoulder?
  3. Is the lap belt low, touching the tops of the legs?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, your child still needs a booster.  Most children do not fit properly in a seat belt until they are 4’9” tall.
